Are ‘Forever Chemicals’ Lurking in Your Water?

In recent years, the term “forever chemicals” has gained significant attention, particularly in discussions about water contamination. These chemicals, known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl (good luck pronouncing that) substances (PFAS), are synthetic compounds used in various industrial and consumer products, such as nonstick cookware, water-repellent fabrics, and firefighting foam. What makes them especially troubling is their ability to persist in the environment—and in our bodies—for an almost indefinite amount of time.  And now, they are showing up in tap water, bottled water, and bottled coolers in the workplace.

Unlike many other chemicals, PFAS do not break down naturally. As a result, they accumulate in water sources, soil, and even wildlife, posing significant risks to human health. Studies have shown that exposure to high levels of PFAS can lead to a range of health issues, including cancer, liver damage, immune system disruption, and developmental problems in children.
