While out and about today for my job, I saw a large stack of 5-gallon water bottles outside of a local competitor’s business. It was the same stack I saw yesterday. It’s a gorgeous day here. Sunny and 75 degrees.
If most of you saw a stack of 5-gallon plastic water jugs baking outside in the sun, it might not have raised any red flags. But it certainly did to me. And here’s why is should to you too.
Plastic, especially the kind used in large water jugs (usually polycarbonate or PET), can break down when exposed to heat and sunlight. When these jugs sit in direct sunlight or in hot delivery trucks and loading docks, they can begin to leach chemicals like BPA (bisphenol A) or antimony into the water inside. These compounds have been linked to a variety of health concerns, including hormonal disruptions and increased cancer risk.
Even if the jug is labeled BPA-free, that doesn’t mean it’s safe. BPA-free plastics often contain other bisphenol substitutes that may be just as harmful, just less studied.
And here’s another concern: heat accelerates bacterial growth. Once a bottle is opened, warm temperatures combined with any backwash or contamination can turn your water into a breeding ground for microorganisms.
Bottom line?
If you’re relying on bottled water for your office, don’t assume it’s always safe. Especially if you’ve seen it sitting in the sun. For a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable option, consider switching to a bottle-less water purification system. It filters water on demand, eliminates plastic waste, and avoids the health risks of sun-soaked jugs. It’s just a healthier way to go!
The picture you see is a stock photo. Not the actual business. I didn’t want to expose them directly on here. But they really should know better. And now you do too.
